THE FIRST STATE MODEL RAILROAD
CLUB, INC. NEWSLETTER
JULY 2009
NEXT MEETING:
The next meeting of The First State Model Railroad Club, Inc. will be held on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at 7:30 P.M. at
1282 McKee Road (the old REA/Magnum Building) in Dover, DE. From Route 1 or Route 13, go west on Scarborough
Road about two miles and the building is on the right. From Dover, off Route 8, take Saulsbury Road north which turns
into McKee Road and the building is on the left next to Kenton Child Care Center. Come early and check out the
progress and run trains. If lost, call 302-222-7552.
PRESIDENTIAL REMARKS:
Last month’s meeting was interesting with the passing out of the By-Laws. If you did not get a copy, show up and get
one or contact Joyce Stockslager or myself.
Last month’s post cards were well received with everyone (100%) identifying the post card as Wyoming. This month’s
card will be a little more difficult. As last month, the first one to identify the town will win a year’s subscription to the
Delmarva Model Railroad Magazine.
The Web site for the Club is up and running. If you want something put on the site, contact Ed Mace. Look up www.
fsmrrc.org.
I mentioned at the last meeting that Les and I went down to Bryan Hammond’s to pick up some detail parts Les had
ordered. Bryan ordered them for him and had the parts in a week. Bryan orders from Walthers. If you need anything
from Walthers, call or fax Bryan at 302-422-2317 or e-mail him at hammond@dmv.com. If you get a chance to go to
Bryan's, be prepared for what you will see. To start with, he has yards and yards of about 1,000 engines and about
10,000 train cars and they are all functional. It takes about 15 or 20 minutes to complete a full circuit.
The White Elephant Table is going great with numerous deals being made before and after the meeting. Be sure to
clean out your old stuff and trade it or pick up some cash for stuff you don’t need anymore. We also have a neat test
track for HO. It is about 200 feet long.
Our upcoming trip to English’s Hobby Supply in Montoursville, PA. is July 25, 2009. We are going to depart from Les’
house at 7:00 A.M. We plan to stop for breakfast and dinner. This is an all-day trip and we plan to get back around 10:
00 P.M. Each person pays $20.00, which will go towards gas. This is one of the biggest hobby suppliers around. It is
well worth the trip. So far 15 people have made a commitment. They are Benzin, Bryant, Buckley, Burton, Gray,
Herrmann, Mace, Patrick, Roy, Shockley, Souder, Stockslager, Thompson, Valle and Zupan. If your name is not on the
list and you would like to participate, please contact Les or myself.
The Boy Scout Merit Badge date of November 14, 2009 has been confirmed. It will be at Jarrell Station. We already
have two scouts from Florida signed up. We will be looking for simple boxcars to assemble. If you have any to donate,
bring them to the meeting or see me. Jeff Shockley has contacted the Boy Scouts of America and advertised with
them. We plan about 14 boys. Volunteers will also be needed for the day.
There’s a new train shop in our area in Magnolia, DE. It is Nelson’s Trains run by Nelson Davison. He is a dealer for
Hartland Locomotive Works. He is also affiliated with Beacon Hill Trains and is an authorized dealer for Aristocraft and
Phoenix Sound Systems. I am hoping to have him at our next meeting.
I received an e-mail from Bob VanZant in Inwood, WV. Hal Carsten, owner of Carsten Publications, Publisher of
Railroad Model Craftsman, Railfan and Railroad Flying Models passed away suddenly on June 23, 2009 at his home in
New Jersey. He served as President of various organizations, including Hobbies Industries of America, the Model
Railroad Industry Association, Friends of the New Jersey Railroad and Transportation Museum and the Train Collectors
Association and the Wagner College Board of Trustees. He will be missed as one of the Hobby industries premier
promoters.
We have a new member, Graeme Doughty. He is a native of New Zealand and now resides in Felton, DE. His main
interest is HO steam. Welcome Aboard!!
Club Show Coordinator, Jim Valle, informed us that the Greenburg Show at Oaks, PA. was turned down due to lack of
space.
See you at the meeting on July 14, 2009. Jim Thompson, President
