s home is the third house on the left with Train Whistle Pole by Driveway.  Carpool if

PRESIDENTIAL REMARKS:

WOW!!!!  What a year.  I will elaborate more next month, but this Newsletter will be
devoted to the Springfield trip and our most recent train show set-ups.

The Springfield trip is right around the corner—a couple weeks away.  We will discuss
final issues at the upcoming meeting at Ed Kline’s.  To start, we have nine (9) rooms
reserved and can reserve more if anyone decides they want to attend.  But we must
finalize at the meeting.  We plan to leave Dover on Friday, January 23 at 7:00 A.M.
from Souders (across from K-Mart).  Our first stop will be the Fennemore Rest Stop on
the NJ Turnpike.  Our next stop will be when we get hungry, fill up and move on.  We
plan to get to the Sheraton Springfield Monarch, One Monarch Place, in Springfield, MA
between 2:00 and 3:00 P.M.  We will get our rooms and settle in and then go to dinner
around 6:00 P.M. at the Cracker Barrel North in Holyoke, MA.

The next morning, Saturday January 24, the guys will eat at IHOP, West Springfield, at 7:
00 A.M. and be at the Train Show, 1305 Memorial Avenue, West Springfield, MA at 9:00
A.M. for door opening.  Armbands have been ordered.  There will be four (4) big
buildings of trains: The Better Living Center, Young Building, Stroh Building and Mallary
Complex.  There will be 35 operating layouts and scales of  Z - N – HO – S – O and G
gauge.

There will be manufacturers, dealers, booksellers, railroadiana, clinics, live steam,
historical societies and railroad industry representatives.  The Show is Saturday 9 – 5
and Sunday 10-5.

After the show on Saturday, we go back to the Hotel and have dinner in Pete’s Grille.
Have your order for your meals at the meeting and bring your reservation money of
$160.00 per person or $320.00 per couple.  On Sunday, January 25, we will have
breakfast at IHOP again at 8:00 A.M. and be at the Show by 10:00 A.M.  We will leave
for Dover at 2:00 P.M., stop for dinner between 7 and 8 and be home around 9 or 10 P.
M.  It will be an exciting weekend for the men at the train show and the wives at Yankee
Candle and other local stops they may choose to visit.  If interested, please call me at
302-697-6769 and leave a message.

In the last several months we have done 4 shows.  The first was the York, PA show on
October 16-18, 2008 for TCA (18 feet by 90 feet).  Then we did the Laurel Fire Hall
show on November 8, 2008 (18 feet by 30 feet).  The third show was the Jenkintown, PA
show on November 16, 2008 (10 feet by 50 feet) and this past weekend in Oaks, PA.
January 3-4, 2009 where our layout was 14 feet by 86 feet.  The Oaks, PA show was
the largest crowd I have ever seen in all our years of setting up the layout.  The first day
of the show there were over 30,000 people in attendance. We were late setting up due
to the Hall problem and we didn’t put up all of the detail stuff.  Well, it paid off as the
10,000 kids had to each touch something on the layout.  All in all, it was a great show
and we will probably be back in August.  On the subject of layouts, if by any chance a
train is running and the owner is not present and a problem arises, don’t, I repeat, don’t
lay the train aside on layout or tables.  Please put them in the yard.  That is what the
yard was built for.  Our special thanks to Jim Valle for coordinating the Show and special
thanks to Dick Lush, Bill Schroedel, Les Souder, Richard Stockslager, Jim Valle and Jim
Thompson for set up and special thanks to Lee Holloman and Larry Wheeler and
Reggie Finch for helping with tear down.  Ask the guys about their hotel rooms for
overnight at the Hilton Homewood Suites.

Don’t forget the meeting and finalize the Springfield trip.

See you at the meeting, Jim Thompson, FSMRRC President
