      CLUB, INC. NEWSLETTER

     AUGUST 2009

NEXT MEETING:

The next meeting of The First State Model Railroad Club, Inc. will be held on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at 7:30
P.M. at 1282 McKee Road (the old REA/Magnum Building) in Dover, DE.  From Route 1 or Route 13, go west on
Scarborough Road about two miles and the building is on the right.  From Dover, off Route 8, take Saulsbury Road
north which turns into McKee Road and the building is on the left next to Kenton Child Care Center.  Come early
and check out the progress and run trains.  If lost, call 302-222-7552.

PRESIDENTIAL REMARKS:

Last month’s meeting was great with the introduction of guest and new local dealer, Nelson Davison of Magnolia,
DE. who is a dealer for Hartland Locomotive Works which is “G” scale.  He is affiliated with Beacon Hill Train of
Downingtown, PA. which is an authorized dealer for Aristo Craft and Phoenix Sound Systems.  Nelson had units on
display and he presented a seminar at the end of the meeting.

The Treasurer’s Report was distributed by Richard Stockslager.  Before approval, John Gray suggested we move
$1,000.00 from the CD that is about to mature to the checking account for future projects and reinvest the
remainder in another CD.  The motion was approved and passed.

Bryan Hammond was brought up as to when were we going to take a club trip to his layout.  It was decided that a
Saturday during the winter months would be worked out.

The white elephant table has worked very well with a lot of wheeling and dealing going on.  Do some cleaning
out and turn that old stuff into cash.

Copies of the By-Laws are available.  Just request a copy from Joyce Stockslager or myself.

The Boy Scout Merit Badge Program is scheduled for November 14, 2009.  Help will be needed.  Also simple kit
train cars are needed.  Get up with Paul Buckley, Jeff Shockley or myself to show your interest in participating.

Next year’s Springfield Trip was brought up and when mentioned hands went up for those interested in
participating.  The dates for the trip would be January 29, 30 and 31, 2010.  Yes, I said 2010, which is right
around the corner.  There will be four (4) buildings full of manufacturers, displays, model dealers, book sales,
railroadiana, live steam, historical societies and railroad industry representatives.  Check it out on www.amherstrail.
org.

Now to talk about our recent trip to English’s Model Railroad Hobby Shop in Montoursville, PA. Fifteen members
attended.  They were Les Souder, Kevin Herrmann, Paul Roy, Bill Benzin and Jim Thompson who rode with
Richard Stockslager.  Gary Bryant, John Zupan, Ed Mace and Dick Lush rode with Robert Burton.  Paul Buckley,
Jim Valle and Fred Patrick rode in John Gray’s new Dodge truck.  We were to meet at two points: the first group at
Les Souder’s and the second group at Kevin Herrmann’s.  We departed at 7:00 A.M. with our first stop at Cracker
Barrel in Plymouth Meeting, PA. for breakfast with all 15 of us seated together.  From there, all three vehicles
proceeded to English’s in Montoursville, PA.  We got there around 1:00 P.M.  I have some photos of the store and
bins of trains.  We spent about two hours buying things on our lists or random purchases we couldn’t resist.  I
collect cabooses and there must have been 40 to 50 different ones to choose from.  I came home with five
different ones.  Always remember, in this business, when they have a run on items or numbers, you may never see
that item or number again.  I also came home with some outstanding books.  One has the Wyoming Station and
Freight Station in it.  Ask me about it.  I noticed everyone was purchasing items and finding good deals.  Just ask
those who attended about their great finds.  We left around 3:00 P.M. for dinner at Cracker Barrel in Plymouth
Meeting, right off the highway.  After dinner we departed around 6:00 P.M. to get to Kevin’s and then on to Les’s
around 8:30 P.M.  It was a fun day and well worth the trip.

See you at the meeting on August 11, 2009.  Jim Thompson, President
